What is Nose job?

Nose job is a term used nowadays to mean any cosmetic procedure done to the nose to improve the shape or position of your nose. The procedure can be done either without any surgical cuts on your skin or with surgical cuts.

A Nose Job, medically known as Rhinoplasty, is a cosmetic surgical procedure focused on enhancing the appearance of the nose. This popular aesthetic surgery aims to address various concerns such as reshaping the nose, correcting proportions, or improving breathing function. Rhinoplasty can be tailored to meet individual preferences and may involve altering the size, shape, or symmetry of the nose.

History of Rhinoplasty

The history of Rhinoplasty, a cosmetic surgical procedure aimed at enhancing the appearance of the nose, can be traced back centuries. The origins of this practice date to ancient times, with early attempts documented in various cultures.

  • Ancient Practices: In ancient India, the Sushruta Samhita, an ancient Sanskrit text, detailed surgical techniques for reconstructing noses. Sushruta, an ancient Indian physician, is often credited with pioneering early rhinoplasty procedures as early as 600 B.C.
  • Middle Ages: Rhinoplasty techniques were further developed during the Middle Ages in Europe, particularly in Italy. The infamous “tagliacotian” method involved cutting a flap of skin from the arm to shape a new nose. However, the procedure had limitations, and advancements were necessary.
  • 16th-19th Century: European surgeons continued refining rhinoplasty methods. The evolution of surgical techniques progressed, with the introduction of various approaches, including the use of local flaps and pedicle flaps.
  • Modern Rhinoplasty: The modern era of rhinoplasty began in the late 19th century, marked by advancements in anaesthesia and a deeper understanding of surgical principles. Surgeons developed more sophisticated techniques, and rhinoplasty became a specialized field within plastic surgery.
  • 20th Century Onwards: In the 20th century, rhinoplasty procedures saw significant refinement. Surgical approaches became more precise, and innovations such as open rhinoplasty and closed rhinoplasty were introduced. These advancements allowed surgeons to achieve more predictable and aesthetically pleasing outcomes.
  • Contemporary Rhinoplasty: Today, rhinoplasty is a well-established and commonly performed cosmetic procedure. Technological advances, computer imaging, and a better understanding of facial anatomy contribute to more personalized and successful outcomes. Patients can choose from various rhinoplasty techniques to address cosmetic concerns or improve breathing function.

As with any surgical procedure, it’s essential for individuals considering rhinoplasty to consult with qualified and experienced plastic surgeons. This ensures a thorough understanding of the procedure, realistic expectations, and the best possible results.

What does Nose Job involves?

This popular aesthetic surgery involves various aspects tailored to individual needs and preferences. The primary components of a Nose Job include:

  1. Consultation: The process begins with a thorough consultation with a qualified plastic surgeon. During this discussion, the patient’s goals, concerns, and expectations are addressed. The surgeon assesses the nasal anatomy and discusses the possibilities and limitations of the procedure.

  2. Anaesthesia: Rhinoplasty is typically performed under either general anaesthesia or local anaesthesia with sedation, depending on the complexity of the surgery and patient preference.

  3. Incisions: The surgeon makes incisions, usually inside the nostrils (closed rhinoplasty) or across the columella (the strip of skin between the nostrils for open rhinoplasty). The choice depends on the specific goals of the surgery.

  4. Reshaping the Nose: The surgeon then reshapes the underlying bone and cartilage to achieve the desired changes in size, shape, or symmetry. This may involve removing or adding tissue as necessary.

  5. Septoplasty (if needed): If there are issues with the nasal septum affecting breathing, septoplasty may be performed to correct deviations and improve airflow.

  6. Closing the Incisions: Once the desired changes are made, the incisions are meticulously closed with sutures. In closed rhinoplasty, the incisions are hidden inside the nostrils, while open rhinoplasty leaves a small external scar on the columella.

  7. Recovery: After the procedure, patients can expect some swelling and bruising, and a splint may be applied to support the newly shaped nose. Recovery times vary, and patients are advised to follow post-operative care instructions provided by the surgeon.

It’s important to note that a Nose Job can address both cosmetic concerns, such as size and shape, and functional issues, such as breathing difficulties. Individuals considering a Nose Job in the UK should consult with a qualified plastic surgeon to discuss their specific goals, potential risks, and expected outcomes.

What happens during your nose job consultation?

In your consultation, your surgeon will thoroughly evaluate your nasal characteristics and breathing function. This assessment includes examining aspects like shape, projection, height, width, nostrils, rotation, deviation, tilt, and various other measurements. Your surgeon will then engage in a comprehensive discussion with you, exploring a range of options. These may involve open or closed techniques, septal corrections, incision placements, and the post-operative recovery process.
