What is Breast Implant Removal?

Breast implant removal is a surgical procedure designed to remove existing breast implants from the body. Understanding the details of breast implant removal, its potential reasons, and the associated considerations is crucial for individuals contemplating this surgical option.

Reasons for Breast Implant Removal:

  2. Health Concerns: Some individuals may opt for breast implant removal due to health-related reasons or concerns. It could be associated with autoimmune reactions, discomfort, or the desire to eliminate foreign materials from the body.

What is Breast Implant Removal Procedure?

The process of breast implant removal involves a careful surgical approach. During the procedure, the surgeon removes the existing implants, and in some cases, the surrounding scar tissue (capsulectomy) may also be addressed. The incisions are then closed, and post-operative care is crucial for a smooth recovery.

Considerations Before Breast Implant Removal

    1. Consultation with a Qualified Surgeon: It is imperative to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon with expertise in breast procedures. During the consultation, the surgeon will evaluate the specific reasons for removal, discuss expectations, and outline the potential outcomes.

    2. Exploration of Revision Options: In some cases, individuals may consider replacing the removed implants with new ones or opting for a breast lift procedure to enhance the natural appearance of the breasts. Discussing these options with the surgeon can help tailor the procedure to meet individual goals.

    3. Recovery and Aftercare: Understanding the recovery process is essential. Patients may experience swelling and discomfort temporarily, and adherence to post-operative care instructions is vital for optimal healing.

In conclusion, breast implant removal is a surgical procedure undertaken for various reasons, ranging from addressing complications to changes in personal preferences. For those considering this procedure in the UK, consulting with a qualified plastic surgeon is crucial to understanding the best course of action based on individual circumstances and goals. If you are contemplating breast implant removal, reach out to a reputable plastic surgeon to discuss your specific concerns and explore the available options for a safe and satisfying outcome.

Implant Size

Implant Size

Patients should go through two ‘’sizing consultations’’ before they decide on their implant size. This is usually done with the surgeon, nurse or patient coordinator before the surgery takes place. During the consultation, patients wear a special bra and top and try few different sizers in front of a mirror till they find the size they opt to have.

Implant Shape

Implant Shape

Implant shape depends on existing breast shape. Surgeons recommend considering your natural breast shape when choosing. Round implants suit round breasts with centered nipples, while teardrop implants work better for slightly droopy breasts with lower-set nipples.

Inserting Implants

Inserting Implants

Patients can opt for three implant planes:

A - Under the gland
B - Under the muscle
C - Dual plane
The key aim is to minimize risks like rupture, leakage, or feeling the implant edges by ensuring adequate natural tissue coverage.

Breast reduction surgery has proven to help with the following:

  • Improves back and neck pain.
  • Treats deep bra lines on the shoulders.
  • Enhances patient confidence and ability to wear suitable desired clothes and bikinis.
  • Regains patient confidence to engage in social and sports events like swimming, running etc.

Before embarking on breast reduction surgery, patients should spend some time considering their body shape, the size of their breasts and the relationship between the breast and tummy. Nice appearance is often related to ratios and not sizes. Patients with big heavy boobs tend to ask for a very small breast cup. This is proven to be a direct result of the suffer they have due to the weight and shape of their big breasts.

We recommend our patients to speak to their surgeons before deciding on the new desired cup size to make sure they decide on the right cup that would suit their body frame.

Breast implant replacement surgery would not normally involve uplift.

At London Cosmetic Surgery, our surgeon will discuss with the patients the possibilities of using a drain during surgery. Drains help suck out any fluid or blood in the first few hours after surgery. This helps with less bruises, swelling and early recovery.

Breast reduction surgery takes 2- 3 hours.
  • It is important to carefully consider the new cup size you wish to have after your surgery. It is advisable to see a few pre and post operative photos for some patients to have an idea on how your breasts are likely to look. Of course, there could some limitation to achieve your desired size due to the current breast size, shape of your chest, existing lateral fat, or side boob, and your general medical condition and suitability for a long surgery.

Preparing your breast skin with regular cleaning, skin moisturisers, topical and oral multivitamins and zinc products help improve the healing process and achieve better scars.

If you are a smoker, it is crucial to stop smoking, including other forms of smoking like nicotine patches, vapes, and electronic cigarettes for at least 4 weeks before surgery and 4 weeks after surgery to avoid post operative complications including infection, delayed wound healing and bad scarring.

Prepare yourself with a nice surgical bra to wear after your surgery for 6 weeks at least. The team can advise you on some brands to consider.

Fill your fridge with fluids and easy to cook food to avoid a struggle after your surgery.

Make sure you have a company to support you for the first 24 hours after surgery.

  • Following breast Implant Replacement surgery, patients leave the operating theatre with their dressings and garments on to the recovery bay where they spend a few hours to recover. Once fully recovered, had a drink and some food, and mobilised, they are sent home with some painkillers with or without antibiotics. Breast implant replacement patients are advised to take rest for few days and avoid driving and exercises for one to two weeks.

The first change of dressings usually takes place between 7 and 10 days by a qualified nurse or the surgeon. Patients usually have their follow up with their surgeon at 6 weeks, 3 and 6 months before they are discharged.

  • Mobilise and walk to minimise the risk of blood clots.
  • Drink plenty of fluids.
Eat a healthy diet with high protein to help your wounds to heal.
  • Wear your garments day and night for 6 weeks then at night only for another 3 weeks.
  • Shower using natural cleaning materials and tap dry with cotton towels.
  • Leave the dressings intact if there are any. They are usually waterproof or semi waterproof.

  • Smoking or sitting with any smokers for at least 2 weeks.
  • Driving for at least 2 weeks.
  • Exercising for at least 4 weeks.
  • Spending a long time in a bath or open water.
  • Exercising your chest or upper arm muscles for at least 2 weeks.
